Minimum wage: Workers besiege National Assembly for public hearing

Nigerian workers have besieged the National Assembly Complex as the House of Representatives holds a public hearing on the New Minimum Wage Bill today.
President Muhammadu Buhari had last week present the executive bill to the legislature , proposing a new minimum wage of N 27, 000.
The bill had passed the first and second readings at the Senate and the House on Thursday, while the Speaker , Mr Yakubu Dogara, had said the bill might be passed on Tuesday ( tomorrow) .
Several lawmakers who spoke on the bill had dismissed the N 27, 000 as “ grossly inadequate ” while insisting on N 30, 000 as recommended by a tripartite committee made up of the government ( federal and states ) , the organised labour and the organised private sector.

Sala remembered as Liverpool, Man City resume title showdown
Published January 28, 2019
Emiliano Sala
Liverpool and Manchester City will resume their fight for Premier League supremacy in a midweek round of fixtures clouded by the suspected death of Cardiff striker Emiliano Sala.
The Bluebirds are in action for the first time since the plane carrying the Argentine disappeared over the Channel Islands a week ago . They visit Arsenal in what could have been Sala’ s debut for the club .
In the title race , City have been forced to play catch- up since cutting Liverpool’ s advantage at the top to four points by inflicting the Reds only league defeat of the season on January 3.
This week City can apply pressure by cutting the gap to a solitary point as they travel to struggling Newcastle 24 hours before Liverpool host Leicester.

AFP Sports picks out some of the main talking points ahead of the midweek games .
Sala remembered
“ He ’ s going to be remembered as the best player we never had, ” one Cardiff fan said when asked how to put Sala’ s disappearance into words.
Signed from Nantes for a club record fee, struggling Cardiff hoped his goals could keep them in the Premier League. Now they must somehow try to achieve survival on the field while dealing with tragedy off it.
A minute’ s silence will be held before all Premier League games this week in honour of Sala and the plane’ s pilot David Ibbotson after the authorities called off their active search for the aircraft .
Once the action gets underway , though , Arsenal have to be ruthless in the fight for Champions League qualification — victory would take them level on points with fourth - placed Chelsea , who visit Bournemouth on Wednesday.
Cup capitulation heaps pressure on Spurs
“ In reality, the most important thing is being consistently in the top four and playing in the Champions League, ” insisted Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino after crashing out of two cup competitions in four days.
Despite doing a remarkable job to turn Tottenham into top-four regulars, Pochettino is yet to win in a trophy in his five seasons at Spurs .
And by downplaying the importance of silverware , the Argentine has piled the pressure on his injury - ravaged side to hold onto their place in the top four to ensure Champions League qualification for a fourth straight season.
With Harry Kane and Dele Alli sidelined until March , a kind run of fixtures that sees Watford , Newcastle and Leicester visit Wembley before a trip to Burnley over the next month is just what Pochettino needs.
Solskjaer on cloud nine
United’ s caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acknowledged he is “ loving” his role and can do no wrong , with a run of eight straight wins putting the Red Devils right back in top -four contention and into the last 16 of the FA Cup .
More of the same will be expected when Burnley visits Old Trafford on Tuesday fresh from being thrashed 5-0 on the other side of Manchester by City in the FA Cup at the weekend.
United’ s 3- 1 win in the Cup at Arsenal on Friday was just as impressive and leaves Solskjaer spoiled for choice.
Alexis Sanchez scored and Romelu Lukaku provided two assists to make their case for a more regular start , but Solskjaer is expected to keep faith with in- form Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial , who came off the bench to score at the Emirates .
Can Higuain hit the ground running ?
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri finally has the striker he wanted in Gonzalo Higuain , and must now hope the Argentine ’ s firepower keeps his side in the top four.
Higuain failed to find the net in Sunday’ s 3- 0 Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday to get up to speed and will likely make his Premier League debut away to Bournemouth on Wednesday.
A 2- 1 win over Spurs to reach the League Cup final last week suggests Sarri ’ s side are a different prospect when Eden Hazard is restored to his favoured position on the left of a front three .
Higuain’ s presence should allow the Belgian to shine. The on -loan Juventus striker comes with a prolific record in club football .

Consequently, IGP Adamu has sent their names to the Police Service Commission(PSC) for consideration and approval.

According to the report, Taiwo Frederick Lakanu joined the police from Lagos state in February 1986 and Godwin Nwobodo, joined the police from Enugu state in 1984.
Others are Ogbizi Michael, who was a former Abia state police commissioner, and Michael Lamorde, who was a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from Adamawa state.
According to the news outlet, their respective portfolios would be announced later by the Police Service Commission.
Recall that Legit.ng had reported that the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, retired seven deputy inspector-general of police who are his seniors.
The seven officers were said to have joined the police before IGP Adamu, who was appointed on January 15 after the former IG Ibrahim Idris was retired when he attained 60 years.
The retirement of the officers was said to be in line with the norm in the police force that recommended the retirement of senior police officers when an officer junior to them in service or lower in rank is appointed to lead the institution.

They said Onnoghen was a burden and thus deserves to be removed.
Recall that the entrance of the National Secretariat of the Nigerian Bar Association was besieged by members of the National Interest Defenders and Lawyers in Defense of Democracy over the suspension of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.
President Muhammadu Buhari has removed Onnoghen and swore-in Tanko Mohammed as acting chief justice of Nigeria on Friday, January 25.
www.winsome2020.blogspot.comThe Punch reports that the protesters on Monday, January 28 called on the president to rescind his decision and return Onnoghen.
Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has unanimously struck out the case of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ekiti state, Olusola Eleka and upheld Kayode Fayemi of the APC as a duly elected governor of the state, The Punch reports.
Detail of the tribunal's ruling is still scanty as at the time of filing this report.
It may, however, be recalled that Rufus Adunmo, the deputy director general of the campaign organisation of Governor Fayem, on Monday, November 26, 2018, told the tribunal that the July 14, 2018 governorship poll was the best the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ever conducted.

As the 60th defence witness in the case, Adunmo insisted that the election was free, fair and credible by all standards, despite claims of bias, violence, vote-buying and other forms of malpractices that occasioned the election.
Fayemi was also present at the proceedings which was led in evidence by his lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
Adunmo said before the tribunal chaired by Justice Suleiman Belgore that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were not biased against any party as alleged.
Fayemi had on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 filed a 2,225-page defence to counter the petition of the defeated candidate of the PDP and former deputy governor of the state, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka.
A statement made available to
Legit.ng explained that eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria led the legal team of the governor.
Fayemi, in the defence, with over 3,000 documents as exhibits, averred that he actually won the gubernatorial election of July 14, contrary to claims by Eleka and urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition for lacking in merit.

Nigerians have in recent months been crying out for a reform of the Special Anti-Robbery (SARS) over their reportedly unchecked excesses.
There have been disturbing reports of the activities of SARS, with many claiming most officers of the squad are given to extortion and the gross abuse of people’s funadamental human rights.
Nigerians who have suffered at the hands of some overzealous officers of SARS have taken to popular social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to express their ordeals with video and photo proofs to support how they have been maltreated in the hands of those that should protect them.
It is no wonder therefore that one of the reforms the new inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, made was the breaking up of SARS and assigning them to state commissioners of police.
In a poll conducted by Legit.ng on Facebook and Twitter, Nigerians were of the strong belief that the new reform by the IGP will make the police better.
Out of the 652 people who participated in the poll on Facebook, 71% believe that the reform will help re-position the force on a right part, while 29% do not trust in the power of the reform.

- Former Governor Isa Yuguda says he is ready to serve as a chairman of a local government if his people wanted such
- Yuguda reportedly says this to emphasise his readiness to work for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019
- Senator Godswill Akpabio says the youth and women remain important to the victory of the APC
A former governor of Bauchi state, Isa Yuguda, hosted the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the presidential support committee saying that he is ready to work as chairman of a local government if his people want him to do so.
The central working committee is a platform coordinating over 4,000 APC support groups for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, which is led by its national coordinator, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Daily Trust reports that Yuguda said this to show he is prepared to take any role in the bid to ensure the victory of President Buhari on February 16, 2019.

“I have to thank Almighty God for us to be able to assemble and interact with one another. I listen to the national coordinator as they kick-start activities in earnest in order to ensure that we achieve the objective of successfully bringing back Mr President to his seat come February 2019.
“Mr national coordinator, I recently joined. Since I joined, I have become a very active member. We have only few weeks to the presidential election. We are supposed to be working 24 hours.
“We are very confident that you have what you need to succeed. As you did say, it’s not about positions you held, it’s about how effective you will be.
“Whatever position you are holding, I’m prepared to work as a local government chairman now, having been a two-time minister, two-time governor and a managing director of two banks.
“So, if I’m given a job of chairman of a local government today, and my people want me to serve them, I will do that.
“We should humble ourselves. It’s not about position, no, we don’t have time. Let’s just work together as a family, let’s deliver,” he said.
In his speech, Akpabio, who was governor of Akwa Ibom, said women and youth remain important to the victory of President Buhari.
“We must ensure that from Abuja, we move right down to where elections are held. We must go back to the units. We must have unit collators, monitors, observers, and watchers.

“We must have those who will follow the results from the unit to the ward level, from the ward level to the local government level, and from local government level to the state level, and from the state level to the central collation point.
“This is the reason why I believe strongly that we, PSC, have the capacity and spread. Let me say that we must bond together as a family. The only appointment I want you to have in mind is to be a coordinator for President Buhari in 2019 election,” he said.
Legit.ng earlier reported that the governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi, declared that President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are sure of massive votes from the south western region of Nigeria during the February 16, election.
However, Atiku Abubakar recently reacted to the news that Ghana had overtaken Nigeria as West Africa’s largest recipient of foreign direct investment saying
he would reverse the trend if elected .
It was gathered that Atiku described the development as disappointing, pledging to make Nigeria regain its status as Africa’s top recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) once he becomes the president during the 2019 presidential election.
